Tips for Keeping the Holidays Fresh, Clean, and Disinfected

December 9, 2020

There’s a special kind of magic surrounding the holidays, but you can’t deck the halls and decorate cookies until you’ve done a little cleaning.

It’s hard to keep a tidy house under normal circumstances, but the merry chaos of the season gets even more complicated when you factor in the friends that are bound to stop by, the long winter break the kids have from school and the relatives that plan to visit.

There’s no reason to worry, however. We’ve got a few great, non-toxic tips you can use to get everything clean and ready for Santa’s visit:

Scrub Sinks and Tubs With Salt and Baking Soda

You can have your sinks, tub, shower and grout sparkling clean simply by combining two common household ingredients: Baking soda and salt. Add about two teaspoons of salt to ¼ cup of baking soda and mix with a few drops of water until you have a coarse paste for scrubbing. It will cut through the toughest soap scum and wash straight down the drain when you’re done — without doing damage to the environment.

Make an All-Purpose Cleaner Out of White Vinegar and Water

Ditch the whole pile of toxic cleaning supplies in your cabinet. You can replace them with a simple 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water, which should be kept in a spray bottle for convenience. Spray the mix on windows for clear, streak-free glass, use them to eliminate dust and bacteria on window blinds, remove the gunk from your microwave, and make your coffee maker look new again.

Use Essential Oils Instead of Synthetic Fragrances

Nobody wants their home to smell like last night’s dinner or the kids’ dirty shoes, but scented candles are packed full of synthetic chemicals that trigger allergies and asthma and damage the environment. For a non-toxic alternative, consider using organic essential oils, instead. Just mix about 8 drops of your favorite holiday scent, like peppermint or clove, with a cup of distilled water and pour into a spray bottle. Shake well (so that the oil is evenly distributed) and spray wherever you want the scent to linger.

Prevent Messes From Accumulating With a Proactive Approach

One of the easiest ways to control the holiday chaos is to clean up messes while they’re fresh and relatively contained instead of waiting until they turn into a caked-on disaster. Keep a pile of microfiber cloths around to wipe away spills as soon as they happen. A quick dab or two is all it takes to get fingerprints off the wall, clean water rings from a table, and eliminate dust and spots from television screens and laptops.
